why write?

I have to write what I hear in my head, what I dream in my sleep, what my bones ache to express.

My poems tell stories of strength, love, regret, disobedience, loss, hope, redemption, and whatever whispers.

burn

Happy 2021!

I pulled a line I wrote in 2018 about forgiveness, more came in 2019, and in 2020 stuff came together for “burn”.  Here are four stanzas:

she doesn’t want to, but she does sit with her back to the door

nobody else will

she faces a couch

plushed by a priest

by a fairy godmother whose wand has warped from either fireplace

desert, or

damnation

don’t judge anybody, she’s told

Abraham

Isaac

Jacob’s god will

she can’t help it

she judges herself while she wanders her desert

while she sleeps

“unforgivable”, somebody says

she keeps her sins in a deep freeze, preserves them

she tries to pray

who should she call?

father?

son?

ghost?

altar accoutrements trap her

the fairy godmother and priest proffer a chalice

she imbibes
